The Town of Southport was established in 1832, and was one of the very first Marion County communities to be incorporated in 1853. In 1969 Southport chose to be an "excluded" City within Uni-Gov, the consolidation of Indianapolis and Marion County governments, thereby retaining its unique presence on the edge of the big city.
